Safe Winter Driving Message from the Lyon County Sheriff's Office

Winter weather in Lyon County can change quickly, and supposedly, it's finally here, creating hazardous driving conditions on our roads. Snow, ice, and reduced visibility increase the risk of crashes—especially during early mornings and evenings. We encourage everyone to slow down, allow extra travel time, and maintain a safe following distance. Make sure your vehicle is winter-ready with good tires, functioning lights, and a full tank of fuel. If conditions worsen, consider postponing travel whenever possible.

Your safety—and the safety of our deputies and fellow motorists—is our top priority. Please drive cautiously, buckle up, and watch for icy spots, especially on bridges and shaded roadways. Together, we can keep Lyon County roads safer throughout the winter season. Stay alert, stay prepared, and arrive safely.

Before heading out, plan ahead and give yourself extra time. Slowing down and driving defensively can make the difference between a safe trip and a serious crash. Please remember that road conditions can vary greatly across the county, even within short distances.

Winter Driving Safety Tips:

Slow down: Reduce your speed and adjust for road, weather, and visibility conditions.

Increase following distance: Leave at least 5–6 seconds between you and the vehicle ahead to allow for longer stopping distances.

Watch for ice: Bridges, overpasses, shaded areas, and rural roads can freeze first and remain icy longer.

Prepare your vehicle: Ensure tires are in good condition, windshield wipers work properly, headlights and taillights are clean, and your fuel tank is at least half full.

Use headlights: Turn on your headlights during snow, fog, or low visibility—even during daylight hours.

Avoid sudden movements: Brake gently and steer smoothly to reduce the risk of skidding.

Carry emergency supplies: Keep blankets, warm clothing, water, snacks, a flashlight, phone charger, and basic first-aid supplies in your vehicle.

Stay informed: Check weather forecasts and road conditions before traveling.

If conditions worsen, delay travel: If you don’t need to be on the road, consider postponing your trip until conditions improve.

Move over for emergency vehicles: Give deputies, first responders, and tow operators plenty of room as they work to keep roads safe.
